Have you ever heard of the "One Laptop Per Child" (OLPC) initiative? This is a noble, but ill-fated attempt to, "create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning." Although the initiative has created a huge level of interest, funding and development in the realm of low-cost computing, its most important outcome, the creation those educational opportunities for the world's poorest children, has remained beyond the reach of the initiative with only 1.5 million laptops delivered in five years of the program's existence (more information about OLPC here).

Following up on my last post, Rethinking Our Apps-sumptions, which pointed out that most phones in use in the developing world can't run apps, I thought it might be a good idea to show what the phone "ecosystem" in the developing world looks like.
